#62. So honey don't you fret, you ain't seen nothing yet

Hiya pals,

Happy Friday! This week has been so long and busy at work, so I am so glad it's the weekend now so I can have a rest.

I am heading through to Ayr after work today (blogging this on train as a matter of fact - love technology! but also apologise in advance if things look a little wonky) for a Burn's Supper weekend at a friends house. We did it last year as well and it was great fun...a few nights away from Edinburgh, dressing up for a Burn's Supper (with a tartan twist, although I have failed this year and forgot my 'twist' and haven't been able to find anything to borrow from Stage Management in work, so will need to find a piece of ribbon or something tomorrow) and then a wee night out in Ayr. Fun times!

I was down in London a few weeks ago so thought I would share a few photos of what I got up to when I was down there. For those who have been reading my blog for a while, you will know I love London, getting to go and visit friends in the big smoke. I always have such a great time and would definitely consider moving there one day.

Anyways, on with the pics. I was a bit snap happy as I had borrowed a nice camera for the weekend, so hope you enjoy.

A lovely little alley on Angel. This is where the famous Breakfast Club is, we came and were intending to try it but it was queued out the door...must be good then! Will try it at some point I'm sure, there's always a next time.

This is the breakfast we got instead! So as a total grubber I am not really upset at all about The Breakfast Club (think its the name that excites me really because I love the movie so much. How cool to say I've eaten at The Breakfast Club! Anyways wee went to The Blue Legume just further up Angel High Street and the food was amazing! Lots of choice, lots of antique mirrors on the ceiling and a cabinet full of delicious cakes!

Kim and I went to the Hollywood Costume Exhibition which was so cool. I really wanted to see my blogs namesake the ruby slippers, which I did and got out of the V and A without running away with them! Haha they were gorgeous! It was so interesting seeing all the costumes, all memories of a film and pieces of cinema history. All the costumes had explanations of why certain elements were chosen, notes from the designer and what they were trying to achieve with the piece and some even had video interviews with the directors and designers so was so interesting to hear that side of the story. I could easily have spent a lot more time wandering around. My favourite costumes were of course, Dorothy's from the Wizard of Oz but also loved Charlie Chaplin, Audrey H's dress from Breakfast at Tiffanys, Harry Potter, the costume drama dresses from Shakespeare in Love, Elizabeth etc (they were so ornate!), the Addams Family and THAT green dress from Atonement - just stunning!

Ceiling in the V and A!

We bought Hummingbird Bakery cupcakes/brownies but didn't get a chance to eat them on the Saturday so had them with tea for Sunday brekkie- BEST BREAKFAST EVER, like seriously!

My red velvet cupcake, the yummiest thing I have ever tasted. I have the Hummingbird Bakery recipe book so will need to try and make them myself soon.

My outfit for Sunday morning wanders around Portobello Road market featuring my new tights from Anthropologie. It was freezing though, so much colder than Edinburgh but they kept my legs lovely and toasty.

Portobello Road has so much cool stuff, like these vintage suitcases. Everytime I hear of Portobello Road I keep singing the wee song from Bedknobs and Broomsticks. Such a good film.

Coloured houses on Portobello Road. There were some cool buskers too; a man doing the moonwalk and performing Michael Jackson hits..lots of woohoos an a guy with a double bass singing and spinning it, awesome!

Wandering around the market - so many cool vintage stalls.

We found this cafe/bar which was nice and chilled..a wee hidden gem. It was so cold though we wanted to be inside like the wimps we are! Haha

We ended up eating in a Malaysian cafe which was so good! I had this beautiful chicken with coconut, sweet potato and lemongrass curry and Kim had a veggie selection. All the curries were made behind the counter for you to choose from...I struggled as they all looked so good.

Little pop up shop we found on the high street...such beautiful clothes!

Say cheese! This is Kim! Haha not just takin photos of a random in the mirror. Kim bought a beautiful dress from work from this shop...absolutely stunning and the perfect balance between professional and feminine.

More lovely clothes in this lovely shop.

So much jewellery, I wanted everything! I really like turquoise which is surprising cause I don't actually own any!

Love Portobello Road - would be such a cool place to live!

What have you all got planned for the weekend? Anything fun?

I am also excited to announce the winner of my Hannah Zakari giveaway (drum roll please)...Lary Mello from Taste my Closet! Well done lady, I have sent you a wee email.

Today's song on repeat - Soul Man, Sam and Dave. There are so many versions of this (James Brown...Blues Brothers) but this is my fav and where todays blog post title comes from. In work we are doing a co-production with the Citz in Glasgow called Takin' Over the Asylum...Scottish folk, you might remember that it used to be a programme on the BBC in the 90s (I actually don't) and had the lush David Tennant in it. Anyways, we are doing this as a theatre piece and it has an AMAZING soul and R'n'B soundtrack and this is one of them. TUNE!

  4. Love this post, because it references two of my favourite things in life, my favourite movie "The Breakfast Club" and The Hummingbird's red velvet cake. Okay so it wasn't actually the movie you were referencing but I still love the name of that place and a red velvet cupcake is always a must every time I'm in London, it is the most beautiful cake I've ever tasted. I'm in London tomorrow so will be making the necessary stop there I'm sure. Looks like you had a really great time, loved all your pictures!
